This will be a fun exploratory workshop where you’ll get to practice one of the techniques Deborah loves and uses the most: wet-on-wet technique.

We’ll make puddles of water and touch them with the magic of the beautiful handmade pigments of LDBA. We’ll experiment with bright bursts of color and subtle kisses of lights and shadows and experiment with the many ways different kinds of colors touch down and interact with water on paper. Then you’ll learn more about composition as we slowly bring up pictures and set scenes on our backgrounds in playful ways. You’ll practice layering on wet-on-wet, mark-making on top of wet-on-wet, and simply letting water run with color to see how different techniques might add depth and beauty to your paintings.

We’ll also get to play with pen and ink, pastels, wax crayon, even paper cutting and collage and discover how you can bring out the stories in your imagination with different materials alongside watercolor. Deborah will help you learn to master the art of exploration and seeing in new ways, building upon meditative exercises to set you free from expectations of perfection and experiment our hearts out for a super fun afternoon of water + color.

You’ll leave having created vibrant loose watercolor scenes inspired by the beautiful land and cityscapes of New Mexico.

All levels welcome and all materials provided but feel free to bring your favorite brush and LDBA palette

Deborah Stein lives, paints and writes in NYC and the Embudo Valley in New Mexico. She teaches visual narrative workshops, runs twice a year artist residencies. Deborah studied the passing on of traditional arts with a toymaker family in Northern India, worked with NYC school kids as a museum educator at the Museum of Arts & Design and has traveled and taught alternative arts education workshops about seeing and translating the world in new ways for adults and children for a lifetime.
