Suminagahsi - the contemplative art with Heather Batts 3/16/25

Join us for an afternoon of meditative immersion in the wild and ephemeral process of suminagashi marbling.

Beautiful in its simplicity and directness, suminagashi, or “floating ink,” is greater than the sum of its parts. Originating in 12th century Japan, this technique harnesses the surface tension of water to produce original artworks born of the interplay between air, ink, water, and you.

Due to the high levels of creative surrender involved, Suminagashi is a remarkable way to unlock stuck creativity, promote mental well-being, and enter the coveted state of childlike play that Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, who coined the term FLOW, calls “the secret happiness.”
Students will learn this technique using ink, paper and water to create their own stunning patterns. We will also use watercolor and other mediums resulting in several pieces of original artist papers to take home. Materials will be available for purchase so this practice can me continued at home.

All materials are included and all skill levels welcome.

Heather holds a BFA degree with a specialization in oil painting. Endlessly curious, she discovered the practice of suminagashi in 2023, and was instantly drawn to its lessons and its boundless potential to free her from her inner critic.
