We love to paint small things and have an affinity for "specimen painting". In this Sunday morning workshop we’ll play with watercolor and gouache too, transparent and opaque, on different size papers from miniatures to large works. 
We’ll examine old style specimen books and charts before diving in to draw and paint the creatures we love. Keeping in mind the idea of portrait while we explore shape and color, light and shadow, we'll also be toying with new surfaces to paint on besides white paper including a collaged page, black paper and colored backgrounds. 
We’ll end the session playing with ideas about real and imagined creatures while considering scale, shape and line and as always, color in this incredibly fun and colorful workshop.
All materials provided and all skills welcome. Feel free to bring pictures or models of your favorite little creatures!

Deborah Stein lives, paints and writes in NYC and the Embudo Valley in New Mexico. She teaches visual narrative workshops, runs twice a year artist residencies. Deborah studied the passing on of traditional arts with a toymaker family in Northern India, worked with NYC school kids as a museum educator at the Museum of Arts & Design and has traveled and taught alternative arts education workshops about seeing and translating the world in new ways for adults and children for a lifetime.
